Skys the limit Farnborough sales cheer aviation industry

first_imgWhile the value of 2010 orders falls markedly short of the last show (UDS87 billion in 2008 – before the global recession), it easily outstripped the USD7 billion orders made at Farnborough’s sister show at Le Bourget last year. “The 2010 show has been very successful and the figures demonstrate [a] mood of strong optimism…which is very encouraging given the current global economic climate,” Aerospace, Defence and Security Trade Organisation Chairman Ian Godden said. Despite the sales upswing, that two newly created plane leasing companies were among the biggest buyers suggests many airlines still cannot finance their purchases, reported the Associated Press. Airbus bested rival Boeing, announcing last week firm orders for 133 aircraft worth USD13.2 billion. Boeing’s commitments came in at USD12.8 billion, not including a USD 2.6 billion American Airline deal signed away from the show. These firm orders came from plane leasing companies, GE Capital Aviation Services and Air Lease Corporation, as well as airlines, Aeroflot, Garuda Indonesia and Germania. According to media reports, Boeing chief executive Jim McNerney claimed future deliveries indicate Boeing will regain market leadership over Airbus in the next couple of years. Airbus announced they further received memorandum of understanding agreements for 122 aircraft to the value of USD15 billion from Hong Kong Airlines, Virgin America and Thai Airways International. Source = e-Travel Blackboard: G.A “It certainly shows that airlines are moving increasingly towards the leasing model as they try to defer their assets and focus on their core business, which is transferring passengers from A to B,” Frost & Sullivan commercial aviation analyst Max Sukkhasantikul told the news agency. The final trade figures will be announced early this week. Latest trade figures from this year’s Farnborough International Airshow of USD47 billion suggest the aviation industry is on the mend and up in spirits. “This clearly proves that the market is back, and that our new end of year target for over 400 orders is within reach,” Airbus Chief Operating Officer John Leahy said. last_img read more

2015 A Space Taxi Boeings space odyssey

first_imgSource = e-Travel Blackboard: G.A Astronauts will be able to hail a space taxi from Cape Canaveral to the International Space Station if the Boeing Company’s plans to launch space services from 2015 come to fruition.Earlier this year, NASA pledged USD18 million in seed money to Boeing and partner Bigelow Aerospace to develop an Apollo-style capsule that could ferry up to seven people to the final frontier, reported USA Today. This, combined with the 2011 proposed budget from the White House which sees USD500 million go to the development of private taxis and it is clear there is big money in the industry of which people want a cut, the newspaper said.Florida, Alabama, Texas and Nevada are set to compete for manufacturing rights to Boeing’s new craft although exactly where the work will be done along with how many jobs will be created is expected to be announced within three months.”We’re going through the process of deciding not only where we will do the manufacturing, but where we will do the mission operations, the training, the sustaining engineering, the program management — all aspects of the program,” Boeing Commercial Space Vice President John Elbon told the newspaper.Boeing hopes to launch four test flights in late 2013 and 2014, three of which will depart from Florida’s Space Coast. The news comes as Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic spacecraft, SpaceShipTwo built by California’s Scaled Composites, confirmed it could see its first space trip later this year, reported space media.last_img read more

Qantas staff to strike

first_imgTravellers flying with Qantas next week may experience flight disruptions as staff plan to walk-off the job for up to four hours over ongoing pay disputes.Organised by the Transport Workers Union of Australia (TWU), the work stoppages are set to take place on Tuesday 20 September 2011 from 5.00am and will include up to 3,800 baggage handlers, ground staff, catering, freight and other transport employees.Announcing the strike late yesterday TWU noted that industrial action will be accompanied by a range of administrative bans, which Qantas said could affect operations for up to 48 hours. With up 95 percent of staff voting in favour of the stoppages, TWU lead negotiator Scott Connolly explained that the move comes after Qantas refused to provide staff with job certainty and new terms of pay despite the carrier announcing expansion into Asia as well as achieving a 120 percent rise in profit.“The so-called ‘new spirit’ that Qantas has spent millions on advertising in the last three weeks hasn’t been on show during months of negotiations with Qantas management,” Mr Connolly explained.“TWU members in ground crews, presentation staff and catering have been seeking certainty from management about new terms of pay, conditions and job security since the old enterprise bargaining agreement expired months ago.”However, Qantas Group executive Olivia Wirth stressed that despite months of negotiations and reasonable pay suggestions put-froth by the carrier, the union’s demands would decrease the airline’s competitive edge.Currently the worker’s Group has requested a pay increase of up to five percent for each year of the agreement, one percent compulsory employer contribution for each year of the agreement as well as the same pay rate for casual and permanent Qantas staff.Ms Wirth noted the union’s willingness to accept a 12 percent lower deal with Virgin as well as a wage freeze and a lower pay scale for new starters.“The union is giving Virgin a competitive advantage over Qantas by agreeing to Virgin paying its staff significantly less than Qantas, and not imposing site rates,” she said. “The TWU also wants to renege on a deal agreed only two years ago which saw the establishment of Qantas Ground Services (QGS) on a separate pay agreement, which enables Qantas Group employees to do work that used to go to labour hire companies.”Although the carrier has urged the union to return to the negotiation table, Qantas said it is in the process of organising a contingency plan that would minimise disruptions on both domestic and international services. Turkey updates visa process with online preapplication system

first_imgIn line with the procedure observed by Schengan countries and to make it transparent, Turkey has updated its visa application process for various sub categories. For this reason, the Turkish Ministry of External Affairs has come up with ‘pre-application system for Turkish Sticker Visa’ system which will require applicants to fill basic details and agree to the terms and agreements online. “Travel agents may enter the details, but the application form needs to be signed by the applicant. Applicants will upload their biometric photograph, income proof, flight reservation, hotel bookings and other supporting documents online, which after uploading successfully will be given a confirmation and a physical application form to be printed and signed by the applicant,” the Consulate General of The Republic of Turkey said. One can seek an appointment online and a travel agent/applicant can visit the Consulate and submit all documents with the passport and make payment. Applicants will have the option to submit their photograph online. However, the online pre-application system is different from the e-visa system.Addtionally, Turkey has witnessed a growth in tourist arrivals from the Indian market. In 2013, the country welcomed 95,000 nationals from India, and in 2015, the figure touched 140,000. “We expect a lot of diplomatic traffic between two countries this year. We expect changes at foreign secretary levels, and hopefully a bilateral agreement. We are hopeful of policy changes and Turkey being offered Visa on Arrival by India,” said Erdal Sabri Ergen, Consul General, Turkish Consulate General in Mumbai.last_img read more

Home Prices See Greatest Yearly Gain Since 2005

first_img Home Prices S&P/Case Shiller Home Price Indices 2014-02-25 Tory Barringer Share Many of the nation’s major metros reported slowdowns—and even retreats—in home prices last quarter, but those weren’t enough to keep 2013 from being the strongest year for house prices in nearly a decade.S&P Dow Jones Indices released Tuesday its S&P/Case-Shiller Home Price Indices for December, showing national prices up 11.3 percent as of year-end, a slight pickup over the previous quarter’s annual improvement of 11.2 percent. The national index covers all nine U.S. census divisions. While prices were strong in Q4 compared to the previous year, they were down relative to Q3, dropping 0.3 percent.“The S&P/Case-Shiller Home Price Index ended its best year since 2005,” said David M. Blitzer, chairman of the Index Committee at S&P Dow Jones Indices. “However, gains are slowing from month-to-month and the strongest part of the recovery in home values may be over.”Blitzer also pointed out there are other factors to consider when looking at the big picture.“Recent economic reports suggest a bleaker picture for housing,” he said, citing weak numbers in existing-home sales and new construction. “Some of the weakness reflects the cold weather in much of the country. However, higher home prices and mortgage rates are taking a toll on affordability.”For just December, the smaller 10- and 20-city composites were little changed, with only the 20-city index showing a minor decline.Year-over-year, the 10- and 20-city indices posted gains of 13.6 percent and 13.4 percent, respectively, approximately 30 basis points lower than their November increases. As of December, average home prices across the United States were back to mid-2004 levels, remaining down about 20 percent from their peaks in summer of 2006.A few cities stood out in the most recent report. According to Dow Jones Indices, Chicago posted its highest annual return since December 1988, while Dallas posted climbed to another new peak with its largest annual gain since its inception in 2000.Denver, which set an all-time high as recently as last September, reported a 0.1 percent monthly drop in home prices, bringing it down 0.7 percent from its peak. Phoenix, coming off of more than two years of consecutive monthly gains, posted a 0.3 percent price drop, its largest since March 2011.Year-over-year, all 20 cities tracked showed positive growth. Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and San Francisco all posted improvements of more than 20 percent, though they also showed lower annual rates compared to November. At the same time, most of the cities ranked at the bottom in terms of annual growth—including Denver, Washington, D.C., and New York—experienced acceleration in home prices. SingleFamily Homebuilders Confidence Highest Since 2005

first_imgSingle-Family Homebuilders’ Confidence Highest Since 2005 in Daily Dose, Data, Featured, Market Studies, News Homebuilders’ confidence in the market for newly constructed single-family homes rose in October, returning to a level not seen since the end of the housing boom in 2005.According to the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB)/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index (HMI), builder confidence in this market increased three points to 64 in October.NAHB Chairman and a home builder from Blue Springs, Missouri Tom Woods noted that the single-family housing market is “making lasting gains as more serious buyers come forward” as builder confidence has floated above the 60s since June.Woods added, “However, our members continue to tell us there are still pockets of softness in some markets across the nation, and that they face challenges regarding the availability of lots and labor.””With firm job creation, economic growth and the release of pent-up demand, we expect housing to keep moving forward as we start to close out 2015.”The NAHB/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index gauges builder perceptions of current single-family home sales and sales expectations for the next six months as “good,” “fair” or “poor.” The survey also asks builders to rate traffic of prospective buyers as “high to very high,” “average” or “low to very low.” Any number over 50 indicates that more builders view conditions as good than poor.In October, the NAHB reported that two of the three HMI components posted gains. The component that measures sales expectations in the next six months increased seven points to 75, and the component that measures current sales conditions rose three points to 70. The buyer traffic index remained the same at 47 in October. All four regions posted gains in October in terms of three-month moving averages for regional HMI scores, the report explained. The Western region increased five points to 69. The Northeast, Midwest, and South all rose one point to 47, 60, and 65, respectively.“With October’s three-point uptick, builder confidence has been holding steady or increasing for five straight months, ” said David Crowe, NAHB chief economist. “This upward momentum shows that our industry is strengthening at a gradual but consistent pace. With firm job creation, economic growth and the release of pent-up demand, we expect housing to keep moving forward as we start to close out 2015.”Click here to view the full report. Former Cardinals kicker Phil Dawson retires

first_img Former Cardinals kicker Phil Dawson retires Up to this point, Mathieu has done exactly that. One of the constants of this year’s training camp has been Number 32 being all over the field making plays, and that translated to the first preseason game last Friday when the rookie tallied a quarterback sack and broke up a pass. It’s all part of the process for Mathieu, who is easily one of the most talented players on the field but fell to pick number 69 for a reason. A risk-reward selection if there ever was one, it seems as if more and more people find themselves not only interested in the player’s success, but rooting for it, too.Mathieu hears the encouragement from the fans, saying he’s been told everything from “Good luck, I hope you stay clean,” to “I hope you come here and make plays like you did at LSU.”“I think a lot of people have kind of jumped back on the bandwagon, so to say,” Mathieu added. “Everybody is starting to root for me again, which is definitely encouraging for me.”Mathieu’s young career has been filled with a good many ups and downs, but through it all he’s managed to find his way onto an NFL field with a chance to start. He admittedly has much to learn about his new position — including the communication aspect, but there is time for that. Should he continue down the current path, soon his name will be listed among the starters, likely to stay that way for many years to come. And chances are, everyone will know how to pronounce it, too. – / 37 Top Stories Comments Share The 5: Takeaways from the Coyotes’ introduction of Alex Meruelocenter_img Grace expects Greinke trade to have emotional impact It’s been a long and winding road.A Heisman Trophy candidate as recently as 2011, Mathieu missed the entire 2012 campaign after being dismissed by head coach Les Miles due to multiple drug-related incidents. His football career on the ropes, the “Honey Badger” worked hard to rebuild his life and image, and has since found a new home and outlook in the Valley of the Sun.Slated to start in Saturday’s preseason matchup with the Dallas Cowboys due to an injury to starting safety Rashad Johnson, Mathieu admitted he could not have fathomed being in this situation just a few months ago. “I think it’s just my opportunity to be there for my teammates,” he said. The chance is there, thanks in no small part to Mathieu’s teammates being there for him. Having a built-in support system with former college teammate Patrick Peterson already on the roster, the 21-year-old has no shortage of people in the locker room who are there to help him, both on the field and off. It’s why Mathieu’s head coach is not worried about his rookie once the structure of training camp is removed.“I think the guys are going to take care of that,” Bruce Arians said. “He’s got an unbelievable support system within the team right now; they want him to succeed.” Derrick Hall satisfied with D-backs’ buying and selling GLENDALE, Ariz. — Tyrann Mathieu has heard his name pronounced a countless number of ways, most of which are technically incorrect.“I think everybody just kind of keeps it simple and calls me ‘Ty,’” he said Tuesday. “That’s the simplest way to do it.”A third round pick by the Arizona Cardinals out of LSU last April, Mathieu appears well on his way to erasing any doubts about how to pronounce his name, as well as about his ability to play football.last_img read more

It looks like the Arizona Cardinals got some much

first_imgIt looks like the Arizona Cardinals got some much-needed salary cap relief.Faced with the fact that receiver Larry Fitzgerald was due to count $18 million against the team’s salary cap in 2014, the team had hoped to come to an agreement with the veteran that would satisfy both sides. And it appears they have done just that.Back in AZ from #SB48 & the 1st order of business this AM was signing a restructured contract to help the @AZCardinals get better for 2014!— Larry Fitzgerald (@LarryFitzgerald) February 4, 2014 Top Stories The 5: Takeaways from the Coyotes’ introduction of Alex Meruelo Grace expects Greinke trade to have emotional impact Derrick Hall satisfied with D-backs’ buying and selling Former Cardinals kicker Phil Dawson retirescenter_img 0 Comments Share “I understand that at 30 years old, there’s things that need to change,” Fitzgerald said at the time. “That’s part of football, that’s part of being an older veteran and part of this league.“I want to see this team do well. I love the nucleus of guys. I know Patrick’s deal is coming up — he needs to be compensated as the best corner in the game, which I feel that he is. We’ve got to take care of Karlos Dansby, Frostee Rucker. There’s a lot of guys that deserve to be compensated for their play, and I understand that.” Fitzgerald, who has played his entire career in Arizona with the Cardinals, is coming off a bounce-back season that saw him catch 82 passes for 954 yards and 10 touchdowns. He made his eighth Pro Bowl. Fitzgerald was due to earn $12.75 million in base salary this season, with the rest of the cap hit being part of a prorated signing bonus. Last week, before the Super Bowl, Fitzgerald told the Dan Bickley Show with Vince Marotta that when the discussions about a restructured contract came, he will “do what I need to do.”What exactly that entailed we do not know, but reports are the move saved the Cardinals about $8 million. My understanding of #Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald’s contract situation is that it was a simple restructure. first_img 0 Comments Share TEMPE, Ariz. — The best team in the NFC, record-wise, is the Arizona Cardinals.Let that sink in for a moment. This is a Cardinals team that, just two years ago, lost 11 of its last 12 games while finishing with a 5-11 record. This is a Cardinals team that, just last season, was at one point 3-5 with losses to each of its division rivals. It’s the same Cardinals team that has trailed in the fourth quarter of half its wins this season, only to make enough plays to come out on top, like in Sunday’s crazy 24-20 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles at University of Phoenix Stadium. Grace expects Greinke trade to have emotional impact All it took was a 75-yard touchdown pass from Carson Palmer with less than two minutes remaining and then an incredibly stressful defensive stand.“Survivors. We find a way to win. It’s not always pretty,” Cardinals coach Bruce Arians said Monday when asked his team’s identity, before lamenting some of his team’s shortcomings in the effort. Is there such a thing as an ugly win? In the NFL, the simple answer is “no.” All too often in the past, the Cardinals made a habit of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory; all too often the franchise would invent new ways to lose games. Now they find ways to win.“You start winning games in the fourth quarter; you believe you’re going to win,” Arians said of how a team learns to be resilient. “You start losing games in the fourth quarter and doubt creeps in. We’ve been fortunate enough to set that tempo with the first one and build on it all year.”It was once thought the hire of Ken Whisenhunt and his staff turned things around, and it would be foolish not to credit the only coach to ever lead the franchise to the Super Bowl with moving things along. But it is obvious that Arians, the man hired to replace Whisenhunt, has changed this organization’s mindset. “It shifted last year,” safety Rashad Johnson said. “Guys, it was just a shift to where we began to believe, believe that we could win. And as that streak continued to go on, that momentum that we ended last season with last year rolled into this year. “We came into this season expecting to be right where we are right now, in the lead of our division and in control of our destiny. Like I said, it started last year and we all believe. Each and every game we go into, no matter who we play, we’re matched up well enough to get a win.”Dating back to Week 8 of last season, the Cardinals have won 13 of 16 games. Their record over that span is tied with the Denver Broncos for the best in the NFL, and it includes wins over five teams who either made the postseason last year or have a good chance to reach it this season. This season, their great start comes after the defense appeared to be ravaged by injuries, defections and suspensions, and the offense was without its starting quarterback for three games. A look at the statistics would show a team that is 15th in the NFL in passing yards but 28th in rushing yards, along with third in rushing yards allowed but 32nd in passing yards surrendered. The 23.4 points they are scoring per game places them 15th in the league. Top Stories Derrick Hall satisfied with D-backs’ buying and selling The Cardinals are plus-9 in the turnover department, however, and are converting 43.3 percent of their third downs, good enough for ninth-best in the NFL. They do some things really well, a handful of things alright and a few things really poorly. It’s all added up to a first-place team in what may be the toughest division in the NFL, and though there is still a lot of football to be played, it’s clear the team’s confidence in itself and the Valley’s confidence in the team is on the rise. And why shouldn’t it be? A 6-1 start has never happened in Arizona, and since 1970, nearly 84 percent of the teams that started off with that record have made the playoffs. The combined record of the team’s remaining opponents is 34-32, but the slate includes a pair of matchups with the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks as well as contests with playoff contenders Dallas, San Francisco and Kansas City. “I would hope that we’d get one of those pretty games, but against the teams we’re playing it’s going to be survival,” Arians said. “Everybody that we play from here on in is in the thick of it.“The Rams are one of the better teams we’re going to play. They might have the worst record, but they’re one of the best teams we’re going to play. Every game is going to be to the wire probably, but it’d be nice to have one that we played as good as we could play.” The 5: Takeaways from the Coyotes’ introduction of Alex Meruelo Against that group, no win would go unappreciated, no matter how it happens. Win pretty, win ugly, just win. Survive. “If you survive, you win, so I guess that’s a compliment,” Johnson said when asked what he thought about his coach’s description of the team’s identity. “I guess, after (Sunday’s) game I was just like ‘we’re fighters.’ “At the end of the day you’re survivors, you’re fighters, you’re overcomers. I think that says a lot. That says that you’re resilient. That says you can go against the odds of what people may think and you can come out on top, regardless of how it looks at you. Like 20-17 with two minutes to go and we were able to pull it off 24-20. So survivor, fighter; at the end of the day it’s a resilient team that plays for 60 minutes.” – / 22 Former Cardinals kicker Phil Dawson retireslast_img read more

Backup Drew Stanton came in, hit John Brown on a 48-yard touchdown pass and the defense added two fourth-quarter touchdowns in a 31-14 win over the St. Louis Rams at University of Phoenix Stadium. The 5: Takeaways from the Coyotes’ introduction of Alex Meruelo Stanton will now take the reins of the Arizona offense for the second time this season. first_img Derrick Hall satisfied with D-backs’ buying and selling Comments Share Grace expects Greinke trade to have emotional impact PHOENIX — The Arizona Cardinals drafted O’Brien Schofield in 2010 knowing he was still recovering from a torn ACL suffered at the Senior Bowl. They knew he would need time to round into form, but viewed him as a developmental pick, someone who they could snag at a lower draft position than his skill set would dictate because of the fact that he was not ready to play yet.Schofield appeared in 10 games as a rookie, tallying 2 sacks, then added another 4.5 in 16 games in 2011. He appeared in just nine games the following season, but picked up 4 sacks. Top Stories Former Cardinals kicker Phil Dawson retires The 5: Takeaways from the Coyotes’ introduction of Alex Meruelo The following training camp, with a new coaching staff in charge, he was cut just after taking the field for the annual conditioning test. The team had just signed veteran John Abraham and needed a roster spot.“For the longest (time), that used to drive me crazy to even think about it because I felt like I had done enough for the organization that I would have got more decency of how they let me go,” Schofield, now a Seattle Seahawk, said at Super Bowl XLIX Media Day Tuesday at the US Airways Center. “But I mean, it’s whatever. I’m a Super Bowl champ. They had to see me twice a year. I know they didn’t want to speak to me the first year and I was perfectly fine with that.“But there’s no need to hold any grudges. I’m still living my dream, I’m still playing ball, I’ve gotten better.”Schofield added his game has grown since walking off the field that day in Arizona, with his coaches not saying a word to him on his way out. It was a tough time for him, but he moved on. He had no choice. In two seasons with Seattle, the former fourth-round pick has appeared in 31 games (395 snaps), racking up 28 total tackles and three QB sacks. ProFootballFocus.com credited him with nine QB hits and 15 QB hurries, as well. – / 38last_img read more

Sometimes I research my own stats to see if there’s a statistical trend that backs up what I think I’m seeing when I watch games. Unfortunately for my time-efficiency, occasionally those stats show me nothing and I throw them out. Here are the stats (or interesting tidbits) from the NFL’s divisional playoff round that I’m using on the show this week. first_img 4 Comments Share LISTEN: Steve Keim, Cardinals General Manager Derrick Hall satisfied with D-backs’ buying and selling Former Cardinals kicker Phil Dawson retires Mortensen’s report also indicated the Cardinals were bringing back reserve quarterback Matt Barkley, who spent a season and a half in Arizona as an insurance policy at the position. All signs point to Blaine Gabbert making the start against the Texans, but that’s not the case, according to general manager Steve Keim.“We haven’t practiced yet (this week), and I know one thing — Drew is extremely tough,” Keim told Doug & Wolf Tuesday on 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station. “He injured his knee, I believe, in the second quarter and finished the game and he’s the type of guy that I would not bet against.“So, it’s hard for me to say at this point. I don’t think there’s any secret that if Drew can’t play, that Blaine Gabbert would be our starter, but I don’t think it’s something that on Tuesday, when we haven’t even been on the practice field, we can forecast yet.”The Cardinals are certainly well-positioned at quarterback with Stanton, Gabbert and Barkley all on the active roster and Mike Bercovici filling a practice squad spot.So why make the move to bring Barkley back if Stanton can go and he’s not needed? “I think it’s pretty simple and I don’t want anybody to really overthink the process but when you have a starting quarterback that’s a little bit banged up you can easily sign somebody — not only somebody who’s off the street, but somebody who has played with you before, knows your system and had a little bit of success last year in Chicago when he went there,” Keim said.“He’s played some football at this level and certainly gives you an opportunity to do some good things if he was forced into play, so it’s one of those things where he gives you a great comfort level — having the ability to come in in a short period of time, know your system and be able to operate under the circumstances where he would have to play.”The Cardinals (4-5) face the Texans, a 3-6 team with quarterback issues of their own, Sunday. Kickoff is at 11 a.m. with pregame coverage starting at 6:30 on 98.7 Arizona’s Sports Station. Your browser does not support the audio element.center_img Who will be the starting quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals when they face the Houston Texans Sunday at NRG Stadium? It’s a question that doesn’t have an answer five days before the game.Drew Stanton, who started last week in place of the injured Carson Palmer, suffered a sprained knee last Thursday in a loss to Seattle. The injury, which occurred in the second quarter, didn’t knock the veteran out of the game. Stanton played the rest of the way and completed 24-of-47 passes for 273 yards and a touchdown and word of the injury didn’t even trickle out until two days later when ESPN’s Chris Mortensen broke the news.
