Worlds biggest shipping company posts Q4 loss revenue up

COPENHAGEN — Danish shipping group A.P. Moller-Maersk is reporting a fourth quarter loss of $34 million, down from a $32 million profit a year earlier. Its fourth quarter revenue increased to $10.2 billion, from 8.4 billion. For all of 2018, revenue was up 26 per cent to $8.1 billion with growth in all segments.Maersk said the revenue improvement was driven by higher freight rates, greater efficiency in its operations, and synergies from the 2017 acquisition of German container shipping company Hamburg Sud.Chief Executive Soeren Skou said Thursday the group had increased revenue “despite significantly higher bunker fuel prices and lower than expected container volume growth in the second half of 2018. However, profitability needs to improve.”Shares were down nearly 10 per cent in Copenhagen. The Associated Press read more

DR Congo UN rushes food to thousands displaced by ethnic fighting

31 December 2009The United Nations is rushing food to thousands of displaced Congolese in northwest Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where tribal clashes have driven 130,000 people from their homes. “Because of ongoing clashes in the area where these people live, it has been difficult to get food assistance to those who need it most,” UN World Food Programme (WFP) Country Director Abdou Dieng said, noting that the food distributions would be widened if security conditions improved.Convoys carrying 50 metric tons of food escorted by peacekeepers from the UN mission in DRC (MONUC) left Gemena in Equateur Province yesterday for the two distribution sites in Bozene and Boyazala, where more than 6,000 displaced people will receive month-long rations of maize, beans, vegetable oil and salt, to be distributed by AVEP, a Congolese non-governmental organization (NGO).According to the Congolese Government, 270 people were killed when inter-ethnic clashes between the Enyele and Munzaya tribes first erupted in a dispute over access to fishing ponds in the Dongo area in November. More than 130,000 people have been displaced since then, over 84,000 of them fleeing across the Oubangui river into the neighbouring Republic of Congo where they started receiving WFP food aid at the end of November.Within DRC, the UN has estimated that some 40,000 people have been displaced internally, but the figure might now be higher. The town of Dongo is reported to be deserted while some localities like Bozene have started to see some returns, but a large number of people are still sleeping in the forest for fear of new violence. Harvest activities have been affected. MONUC peacekeepers and the national army and police have been carrying out joint patrols to reassure people in Mbandaka, the capital of Equateur, that they are safe, and the mission’s military presence in the area has been growing, with 700 troops situated in South Ubangui district and more expected to arrive in the coming days.Overall MONUC fields some 20,000 uniformed personnel in the huge country, with the vast majority in the war-torn east. Since its inception 10 years ago, the mission has seen a return to relative stability in much of the country after years of civil war, culminating in the first democratic elections in more than 40 years,But fierce fighting has persisted in the east, particularly in North and South Kivu, where Hutu militants blamed for the Rwandan genocide of 1994 have fled, compounding hostilities in a region already beset by ethnic tensions. read more

Hunger reduction rates slow down worldwide UN food agency warns

According to FAO’s annual report released on the eve of World Food Day, the number of hungry people declined in the 1990s by an average of 6 million a year. At that rate, says the report, State of Food Insecurity in the World 2001, it would take 60 years to reduce to 400 million the number of hungry people in the world, the target set for 2015 by the 1996 World Food Summit.”Clearly, there has been a slowdown in the reduction of undernourishment in the world,” FAO says, estimating that it would take an average annual decrease of 22 million to achieve the World Food Summit goal. The overall decline in the number of undernourished in the developing regions hides contrasting trends in different countries, the report says. Only 32 of the 99 developing countries studied recorded a decrease in the number of undernourished people between 1990-92 and 1997-99. In these 32 countries, 116 million people were moved out of the ranks of the undernourished. But, the number either did not fall or actually increased in the other developing countries for a total increase of 77 million people. The report notes that the “remarkable growth in food availability achieved in the developing countries more than halved the proportion of undernourished in the total population from 37 percent in the late 1960s to 17 percent at the end of the last century.” However, the decrease was not sufficient to halve the actual number of undernourished in the developing world, estimated at 956 million in 1969-71 and now as high as 777 million in 1997-99, FAO’s latest three-year average estimate. The report notes “a smaller increase in production would suffice if its growth were accompanied by more equitable access to food. This could be achieved through redistribution – of food itself, of the means of producing it or of the purchasing power needed to buy it – to those currently on the lower rungs of the food access ladder.”In connection with World Food Day, observed each year on 16 October, FAO and the European Parliament have organized a round-table discussion to evaluate results of global initiatives enacted by major development stakeholders as part of the World Food Summit goals. The talks will also look at food security issues, as well as initiatives undertaken by the agency’s specialized services in transboundary animal diseases. read more

UN human rights chief invited by Russian authorities to visit Chechnya

At the end of a four-day visit to Moscow, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Louise Arbour said Russian President Vladimir Putin had invited her to visit the Northern Caucasus region, including Chechnya, during her next visit to Russia, which she hoped to make “in the near future.”She added that her Office would establish a presence in Russia. “Through our now closer contact with the Government of Russia, we hope to work on developing a series of concrete, practical programmes designed to bring about tangible benefits to the enjoyment of human rights in this country,” she said on Sunday.“Such programmes will need to focus on the whole range of human rights: not simply the civil and political but also the economic, social and cultural.”The need to safeguard human rights while ensuring security in Chechnya was stressed by the UN Commission on Human Rights’ Special Rapporteur on violence against women, Yakin Ertürk, in a statement after a visit to Russia in December.Ms. Arbour said she had extensive discussions on counter-terrorism. “The people of Russia have suffered acutely from terrorist acts and they deserve both sympathy and support in addressing this problem,” she added. “They have the right to expect from their Government legitimate and effective action in confronting this threat.”In September, 338 people were killed and 747 injured when assailants took hostages in a school in Beslan, near Chechnya. But Ms. Arbour said action ceases to be legitimate, and often becomes ineffective, when it steps over clearly stated bounds set by international human rights law. “When law enforcement officers abuse their powers with impunity and when civilians have no true remedies for violations of their rights by state agents, society is doubly victimized.“The reconstruction of such regions as Chechnya will be critical both in restoring the dignity of its people and also in ending the violence,” she said, adding that her Office stood ready to help and she hoped to pursue the issue in greater detail in the future. In addition to Chechnya, Ms. Arbour discussed a wide range of pressing economic and social challenges facing Russians. “We talked of the HIV/AIDS crisis facing the world and from which Russia is not exempt,” she said. “We spoke, in particular, of the disturbing increase in rates of infection among women – a consequence, in part, of the continuing subordination of women in many parts of the world, both in the home and in society at large.” read more

Mickey Harte Playing intercounty football is not a chore

first_imgMickey Harte: Playing inter-county football is not ‘a chore’ The Tyrone boss has dispelled the notion that the inter-county game is no longer enjoyable. Share15 Tweet Email Tweet thisShare on FacebookEmail this article Jan 17th 2017, 8:00 AM 10,743 Views Tuesday 17 Jan 2017, 8:00 AM 15 Comments Short URL AS THE LONGEST serving inter-county manager in Gaelic football, Mickey Harte has witnessed plenty of change since he took charge of Tyrone in the winter of 2002.One thing that hasn’t altered, Harte says, is the enjoyment players take from competing at the top. Source: Presseye/Andrew Paton/INPHOHarte delivered three All-Irelands in his first six years in charge of the Red Hand, as they brought the game to new heights both tactically and physically.Almost 14 years on from leading his native county to the holy grail for the first time in their history, Harte is well placed to assess where the game finds itself.Jim Gavin’s all-conquering Dublin are football’s current standard-bearers, in an era where being an inter-county player has never been more time-consuming. But Harte rejects the notion that the demands are too high.“There is a huge demand but also the modern day Gaelic football athlete want to do what they are doing,” he says. “I want to set the record straight on that.“Some people would have us believe that they don’t enjoy what they are doing, or that it is a chore for them. I have not yet met anyone who does not enjoy playing for Tyrone and I think there are very few county footballers who do not enjoy what they are doing.“In fact, they set the standards for themselves. They are the most demanding people on their own time, their own commitment and they have to be admired for it. They enjoy what they are doing. Mickey Harte was at the GAA Healthy Clubs launch at Craobh Chiarain GAA Club, Parnell Park Source: Cody Glenn/SPORTSFILE“Why would anyone partake in what they are doing, to the level of it, if they didn’t enjoy it? We don’t want the soundbite going out there that they don’t enjoy what they are doing.“They do enjoy it and they work hard at it. People don’t enjoy putting in the hard grind to get themselves into the peak condition they want to be in, but they know that is the price they pay to enjoy something later.”Harte even says he has had to hold his players back to avoid them over-training.“In fact, in recent times, I have had to tell people to stop training, I never had to do that before in my life. People are doing too much, they don’t understand the value of recovery and you have to hold them back.“That is where they are at, these young men, and I can’t think that men that do that aren’t enjoying it. They love that they have this opportunity to be an athlete at the top-level.”Harte was also keen to downplay the furore over the St Brigid’s contract that was leaked last week. It raised plenty of eyebrows, but he doesn’t believe it’s a widespread issue within the game.“How does that tell us what the standard is across the country? This could be an exception to the rule, perhaps. And it might not be happening to everybody. That is the not standard issue that is happening in club and county teams.“People expect to commit to each other, they are in this together and they must set certain standards. If they don’t want to live by those standards, they move off and do something else. Harte celebrates as the final whistle crowns Tyrone 2016 Ulster champions Source: Presseye/Andrew Paton/INPHO“This is a very extreme example and we can’t hold that up as a typical example of what goes on in the GAA world. Keep it in context, that is overboard and extreme in one fashion, accept it as such, don’t believe that this is the way of the world now. It is not like that at all.“I wouldn’t lay out rules because it’s not for me to dictate how the rules should be. What it is for me is to facilitate the group to decide what they need to do. I have to talk to all of those players and ask them ‘what do you think we need to be about here to deliver the best of ourselves?’ so we come to a consensus of what needs to be done.“So they will come up with something that is sensible and right for them and I think that will still prevail in many places, club and county.”Despite a successful campaign where Tyrone sealed promotion back to Division 1 and lifted a first Ulster crown since 2010, the county board turned down his request for a one-year extension. Harte and Peter Canavan arrive in Tyrone with the Sam Maguire in 2003 Source: INPHOIs he feeling under pressure to deliver this year?“Anyone who is in the business of being as good as you can be, the pressure comes from within. It’s your own pressure to deliver the best of yourself, to help your players deliver the best of themselves, that’s the only pressure I entertain. I don’t entertain pressure from anywhere else.“If someone decides in their wisdom they no longer want me managing Tyrone I have to accept that and move along. That’s not where I am at the moment.“I’m in the business of doing the best for this Tyrone team, I don’t intend to leave that just now. If someone else decides I should leave then that’s their prerogative to do so and I have to live with that. But the pressure is to deliver the best of ourselves.”Harte added that Sean Cavanagh “tweaked something behind his knee” two weeks ago, but he expects Tyrone’s elder statesman to be fit for the start of the league.The42 is on Instagram! Education expenses beyond reach for many families

first_img Facebook Twitter: @NeosKosmos Instagram According the latest Planning for Education Index, released by the Australian Scholarships Group (ASG) Australia has the second highest education cost in the world. Meanwhile, the Australian Retail Association labels skyrocketing back-to-school costs “horrific” as parents struggle to keep up with the price of fees, text books and uniforms.ARA executive director Russell Zimmerman said the rising costs of getting children ready for school — just after Christmas — was increasingly putting pressure on parents.“These days, you can pay anywhere from $15 – $20 for a really cheap pair of school shoes, through to $130 – $140 for a reasonably decent pair,” he told the Herald Sun.“Then you have to think about uniforms for school, and they are not cheap, and quite often, these uniforms can only be bought via the school uniform shops. Then you have the issue around text books; Australia has the second highest cost in the world for text books.”Mr Zimmerman said excursion and school fee-type costs, often called voluntary financial contributions, also awaited parents once the school year started.“It’s certainly not cheap to outfit a child to go back to school,” he concluded.According to the ASG research, 93 per cent of Australian parents believe it is important to save for education. However, other major life events such as buying a house (94 per cent) retirement (93 per cent) and having children (87 per cent) are perceived to be just as, or more, important. While there is strong intent among parents to save for education, the reality is quite different. ASG’s survey of parental attitudes towards saving for education revealed that only 36 per cent save for their children’s primary school education, 37 per cent for secondary education and falls to 34 per cent for post-secondary education.ASG ducation as a financial priority in the same way that focus is given to other major life events such as saving for retirement. The Repositioning Education as a Major Life Event white paper released by ASG this week, surveyed 1,000 Australian parents to understand their behaviours and attitudes towards education in comparison to other life events such as saving for a holiday, purchasing property, investing in retirement savings, getting married or having children.“Since ASG was established more than 40 years ago, we’ve consistently seen the cost of living, property prices and cost of education rise; at the same time, wage and salary growth has struggled to keep pace. This has increased the financial burden on Australians and their financial priorities have shifted as a result,” said ASG CEO John Velegrinis.“In addition, as family financial commitments continue to grow, we’re seeing little support from government initiatives and policies that will help to ease these pressures; making saving for education more important than ever for Australian parents.”“The results highlight the gap between this perceived importance of saving for education and how families are actually planning, prioritising and saving for future education costs. While an attitude change is required from parents, Australians are also in need of greater financial support and resources from the government to assist them in supporting their child’s learning journey,” added Velegrinis urging the Australian federal government to recognise education as a major life event in a manner similar to the way retirement is viewed and treated in policies and government outcomes. “In this way we believe that there is an opportunity to share the financial burden and responsibility between all stakeholders—parents and government.”“Education policies have been a topic of conversation for many years, however, few have focused on preparing and supporting individuals and families to meet the growing challenges relating to the cost of education. With 85 per cent of parents agreeing that the government should help them pay for their children’s education, more can be done to incentivise savings and benefits,” he explained.John Velegrinis.last_img read more

Former Cardinals kicker Phil Dawson retires

first_img Former Cardinals kicker Phil Dawson retires Up to this point, Mathieu has done exactly that. One of the constants of this year’s training camp has been Number 32 being all over the field making plays, and that translated to the first preseason game last Friday when the rookie tallied a quarterback sack and broke up a pass. It’s all part of the process for Mathieu, who is easily one of the most talented players on the field but fell to pick number 69 for a reason. A risk-reward selection if there ever was one, it seems as if more and more people find themselves not only interested in the player’s success, but rooting for it, too.Mathieu hears the encouragement from the fans, saying he’s been told everything from “Good luck, I hope you stay clean,” to “I hope you come here and make plays like you did at LSU.”“I think a lot of people have kind of jumped back on the bandwagon, so to say,” Mathieu added. “Everybody is starting to root for me again, which is definitely encouraging for me.”Mathieu’s young career has been filled with a good many ups and downs, but through it all he’s managed to find his way onto an NFL field with a chance to start. He admittedly has much to learn about his new position — including the communication aspect, but there is time for that. Should he continue down the current path, soon his name will be listed among the starters, likely to stay that way for many years to come. And chances are, everyone will know how to pronounce it, too. – / 37 Top Stories Comments   Share   The 5: Takeaways from the Coyotes’ introduction of Alex Meruelocenter_img Grace expects Greinke trade to have emotional impact It’s been a long and winding road.A Heisman Trophy candidate as recently as 2011, Mathieu missed the entire 2012 campaign after being dismissed by head coach Les Miles due to multiple drug-related incidents. His football career on the ropes, the “Honey Badger” worked hard to rebuild his life and image, and has since found a new home and outlook in the Valley of the Sun.Slated to start in Saturday’s preseason matchup with the Dallas Cowboys due to an injury to starting safety Rashad Johnson, Mathieu admitted he could not have fathomed being in this situation just a few months ago. “I think it’s just my opportunity to be there for my teammates,” he said. The chance is there, thanks in no small part to Mathieu’s teammates being there for him. Having a built-in support system with former college teammate Patrick Peterson already on the roster, the 21-year-old has no shortage of people in the locker room who are there to help him, both on the field and off. It’s why Mathieu’s head coach is not worried about his rookie once the structure of training camp is removed.“I think the guys are going to take care of that,” Bruce Arians said. “He’s got an unbelievable support system within the team right now; they want him to succeed.” Derrick Hall satisfied with D-backs’ buying and selling GLENDALE, Ariz. — Tyrann Mathieu has heard his name pronounced a countless number of ways, most of which are technically incorrect.“I think everybody just kind of keeps it simple and calls me ‘Ty,’” he said Tuesday. “That’s the simplest way to do it.”A third round pick by the Arizona Cardinals out of LSU last April, Mathieu appears well on his way to erasing any doubts about how to pronounce his name, as well as about his ability to play football.last_img read more
