LeBron James unafraid to ask questions on the first day of Lakers training camp

Compared to last year’s younger squad, which was relatively meek in such situations, this roster churns with chatter: players asking questions, veterans mentoring the youth, assistant coaches pushing everyone. That’s the soundtrack everyone wants to hear.Everyone is involved, but it helps that James sets the tone as he adapts to a new team for the first time in four years. Tuesday morning was an all-defense session, during which the newcomers had to learn the Lakers’ terminology.James said he’s had to pace himself as he gets started.“I’m not a very patient guy, but I understand that I have to be patient right now,” he said. “I got to be patient with myself too, because this is a new start for me. This is my first year here. This is my first year in the new system. I know how to play the game of basketball, but this is all new to me too.”There’s been a cursory eye cast on the relationship between James, an intelligent and strong-willed player, and Walton, the third-year coach and how they’ll get along. James said he’s been working well with Walton so far – and that’s all he can really say after the first day of training camp. BALL STILL SIDELINEDDespite Lonzo Ball’s declaration at the start of media day that he was “100 percent” cleared to participate, 100 percent might have different meanings to different people in the organization.Ball sat out Tuesday morning’s practice, out of concerns he’s not ready for contact, according to Walton. Ball was slated to practice Tuesday evening for offensive drills. He left the door for Ball to return as early as Wednesday to full participation.Sign up for Home Turf and get exclusive stories every SoCal sports fan must read, sent daily. As long as he feels fine, he’ll take part in practice tomorrow and that will be contact, and we’ll see how he feels from that the next day and kind of keep building off that.”The Lakers have been cautious with Ball since his March injury that led to knee surgery this summer. While several teammates talked up Ball’s physical maturation this offseason, he’s yet to participate in full-contact five-on-five work, even in summer pick-up games. The Lakers have said it’s been in the interest of getting him adjusted to full contact and tempo.THREE-POINT PRIDEWhile some of the veterans, particularly Rajon Rondo, hoped for a quick scrimmage to end practice, the Lakers instead opted for a 3-point shooting contest. It had a surprising result: A team of Rondo, Michael Beasley, JaVale McGee and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope beat James’ team of Kyle Kuzma, Brandon Ingram and Lance Stephenson. The first query came from LeBron James, who wanted to know if the hand he was using in the drill was the correct one.Coach Luke Walton admired the attention to detail – and the fact that he piped up quickly.“It gets answered and now we have done a better job of learning it as a group,” he said. “Just little things like that you see right away having vets on the team.” Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Errorcenter_img “Give me some time,” James quipped after a reporter asked him about chemistry with Walton. “It’s only two hours. Give me some time, please.” For a team now in two-a-days (with an offense and conditioning session scheduled for Tuesday nights), a little fun was welcomed.“We were just having fun with a game,” Rondo said. “Just get the competitive juices going at the end since we didn’t get the scrimmage, we did it as far as competition and shooting.”last_img read more
