Group Members of Dungeon Lions(L-R) Kunta Kinte Charles,David “Gwappers” Peter, Lennon Bruney, Walton “Fyah Bryte” Dalrymple and Lester “Smooth” Dupigny.Five young men of the community of Pointe Michel are on a journey to highlight Dominica through positive reggae music which their band Dungeon Lions produces.Kunta Kinte Charles, Lennon Bruney, Walton “Fyah Bryte” Dalrymple, David “Gwappers” Peter and Lester “Smooth” Dupigny formed the group “Dungeon Dwellers in 2009 after Fyah Bryte free-styled during one of the group’s hangout.Lennon Bruney and Kunta Kinte Charles deal with the production and editing of the music videos while Walton “Fyah Bryte” Dalrymple, David “Gwappers” Peter and Lester “Smooth” Dupigny are the lead singers. In an exclusive interview with Dominica Vibes News, band members explained that the group started with the name Dungeon Dwellers but this was changed months after the group was formed on advise by one of the members David “Gwappers” Peter to Dungeon Lions. They subsequently released their first music video in 2009 entitled “Brighter Dayz” sang by Walton “Fyah Bryte” Dalrymple which encourages particularly young men and women to hold on, keep their heads up despite the tough times because brighter days will come.Dungeon Lions prides themselves as young men who are motivated to relay positive lyrics of love, unity, peace and hope for generations with the hope of dispelling the stereotype that young people are bad. Band promoter, video producer and editor Kunta Kinte Charles; named after the starring in the Roots movie, says the music the band produces has a positive message even for children.“I think if people take some time to listen to these songs they will see this is great music. When you have songs saying things like “bend down for the wood” and the kids going mad for that compared with our songs like “Show A Little Love”, “I Walk With Jah” or in fact “No Love” by Smooth which talks about no love in the world anymore all you see is guns and that kind of life. So he is asking where has the love gone? Also, we have Gwappers singing “all rasta love to see people living in love and unity, we have Bryte singing “Brighter Dayz” and “Show A Little Love” these are all real positive songs.”To date the group has released several singles including “Far Away”, “She Fell In Love”, “Rasta Must”, and “Feeling So Right” which are featured on YouTube and have received several hits. Charles explained that their music has been receiving good reviews and commendation internationally.“Fans have been checking the music, mainly in Europe; Madagascar, Czechoslovakia Sweden, Spain, Scandinavian countries Norway, Finland, love the music and are and asking for CD’s and to come down to Dominica to meet the group members.”Despite this international recognition, Charles laments that to date the group has not received air play from any of our local radio stations.“We brought a copy of a CD to all the radio stations. I even emailed the songs to one of the popular radio hosts so that they could feature it but we have not heard any of the songs played. To get them to play the song has been a challenge.”Lester “Smooth” Dupigny however says this will not deter the group as “what does not kill you, only makes you stronger so that’s not going to make us give up”.Another lead singer Walton “Fyah Bryte” Dalrymple, thanked the fans for their support but also called on “the radio stations to give local artists a chance. Give us a little air play, a little more support because that can help us to reach far. ” According to David “Gwappers” Peter “music is life and music is love and togetherness. I want us to keep it together because I’m seeing that we can reach places. We don’t have to fight or break up but build the foundation and take it to the higher level.” The band features every Friday at Lintona’s Restaurant and Bar in Pointe Michel close to the popular fish spot called “Kiman’s” from 9 pm and are inviting the public to come and support them.
