Some shops and businesses opened in rural India on Monday as part of a staggered exit from a weeks-long lockdown that has left millions out of work and short of food, while coronavirus infections rose by more than 1,500 over the previous day.India’s 1.3 billion population has been under one of the world’s toughest lockdowns with people forbidden from stepping out of their homes except for food and medicines until May 3.But Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government said some activities, including factories and farming, would be allowed from Monday in the hinterland which has been less-hard hit by COVID-19. Hundreds of thousands of migrant workers fled the big cities for their homes in the villages, unable to pay for food and rent, after Modi announced a 21-day lockdown last month which he extended by another 19 days.Even before the pandemic, India’s $2.9 trillion economy was growing at its weakest pace in over a decade, but now it is expected to slow to even zero growth in the fiscal year that began on April 1, private economists say, putting further pressure on jobs.”The focus is on select industries and farming, and rural employment guarantee program,” said Punya Salila Srivastava, a joint secretary at the home ministry which is managing the re-start of the economy.India had 17,264 cases of coronavirus infections as of Monday and more than 60 percent of these were from five of India’s 28 states. Such an uneven spread allows health officials to focus their efforts on the top affected areas, or red zones, such as Delhi and Mumbai, while allowing other states to re-start activities, another official said.Around 4,000 factories resumed operations in western Gujarat, one of the country’s most industrialized regions, the chief minister’s office said. These included small, medium and big firms in sectors such as chemicals, engineering, textiles, plastics, packaging and automobiles, said Ashwani Kumar, Secretary to the Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani.Modi’s critics have said he should have better planned the lockdown to lessen the impact on the economy and that India had no choice but to ramp up its testing for the coronavirus.”The one-size-fit-all lockdown has brought untold misery & suffering to millions of farmers, migrant laborers, daily wagers & business owners,” said Rahul Gandhi, leader of the main opposition Congress, said in a tweet last week.”It needs a ‘smart’ upgrade, using mass testing to isolate virus hotspots & allowing businesses in other areas to gradually reopen. “On Sunday, India tested 27,824 samples, the highest so far, but still some way off the target of 40,000 a day which officials want to eventually raise to 100,000.Here are official government figures on the spread of the coronavirus in South Asia:* India has reported 17,264 cases, including 543 deaths * Pakistan has reported 7,638 cases, including 143 deaths * Afghanistan has reported 933 cases, including 30 deaths * Sri Lanka has reported 248 cases, including seven deaths * Bangladesh has reported 2,144 cases, including 84 deaths * Maldives has reported 34 cases and no deaths* Nepal has reported 30 cases and no deaths * Bhutan has reported five cases and no deaths Topics : Small businesses reopened in the rural parts of most populous Uttar Pradesh after the lockdown in late March but police were deployed to ensure people maintained social distancing.Ramkumar Sharma, a carpenter on the outskirts of Lucknow, the state capital, said he had opened up for business again and that he would take precautions going forward.”This is a great relief to be able to work,” he said.A small group of construction workers showed up a labor center nearby hoping to get hired for day jobs, only to be dispersed by police.
The Minister of Youth and Sports, Isaac Asiamah, has revealed that the country budgeted Six Million, Three Hundred and Sixty-Five Thousand, Thirty-Three Dollars and Eighty-Four Cents (US$6,365,033.84) for Ghana’s participation at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.Out of this amount, Four Million, Five Hundred and Sixty-Four Thousand, Three Hundred and Fifty-Two Dollars (US$4, 564, 352.00) was expended from the training tour up until the team exited the AFCON at the round of 16 stage. The figures were revealed when the Minister met Parliament on Wednesday to discuss Ghana’s participation at the 24-team tournament in Egypt. The expenditure covered the following:The playing bodyTechnical teamMembers of Parliament’s Select Committee on Youth and SportsRepresentatives of GHALCARepresentatives of Old FootballersSome staff of the GFASome staff of the Ministry of Youth and SportsSome members of the Ghana Supporters UnionJournalistsA further breakdown of the expenditure is provided as follows:Airfare – $924,168Per diem, players – $187,050Per diem, technical staff – $129, 600Per diem, additional technical staff – $90,750Winning bonus, players – $965, 405Winning bonus, technical – $347,027Winning bonus, additional technical staff – $177,000Accommodation – $1,143,519Feeding – $419,300Match Tickets 0 $41,750Medicals – $44,574Visa Fees – $8,541Internal Transportation -$43,092Incidentals – $42,576Total; $4,564,352AnalysisDetails of the budget for every AFCON has always been controversial and this is no different. The most noticeable issue with this budget is the $965, 405 paid to the Black Stars players as winning bonuses.Considering Ghana only won one out of their 4 matches, simple division of that figure by the 23 players would mean that each player was paid nearly $42,000 each. For the one game won?Even if the players were paid a qualification bonus from the group stages, at $10,000 per match, that would amount to $30,000 which still leaves some almost $12,000 unaccounted for.
Durant also had eight assists. Serge Ibaka added 17 points and three blocked shots.“I thought that was probably as well as we can execute a game plan and execute on both ends of the floor, on offense and defense in the second half,” Oklahoma City coach Scott Brooks said. “Seventeen assists and five turnovers in the second half, and we made them miss a lot of shots. I thought we played good throughout the game, but really did a great job in the second half.”The Clippers beat the Thunder 111-103 in Los Angeles on Nov. 8. But they missed their first seven shots in the rematch, fell into a quick 10-point hole and never dug themselves out of it.Los Angeles coach Doc Rivers noticed early that something was amiss.“In the first quarter, you could see we didn’t have it offensively,” Rivers said. “Everybody was kind of missing shots. We didn’t have any rhythm, no speed. When we don’t have any pace by anybody, you know that’s not a good sign. We didn’t tonight.”There were a couple of bright spots for the Clippers. In his return to his hometown, Blake Griffin scored 27 points on 12-for-23 shooting and also had 10 rebounds. He’s had a 20-10 double in 10 of the last 12 games, and has posted an NBA-high 100 such games since the start of the 2010-11 season. The Clippers’ Chris Paul also extended his NBA-record streak while finishing with 17 points and 12 assists. He has opened the season with 13 straight games in which he’s had at least 10 points and 10 assists. Magic Johnson held the previous record of 11 such games to open the 1990-91 season.“We just couldn’t get it going, honestly,” Rivers said. “I thought our offense our defense let us down by the end but at halftime, I thought it was still more of our offense. The way we’ve played the last couple of games, with the ball movement and all that – that was all gone tonight.”Los Angeles pulled within 81-75 in the opening minute of the fourth quarter, but Nick Collison’s three-point play and a jumper by Jeremy Lamb put the Thunder up by 11.Baskets by Los Angeles’ Ryan Hollins and Jamal Crawford made it a seven-point game, but Oklahoma City scored the next seven points and took its biggest lead of the game to that point at 93-79 on a free throw by Lamb with 7:11 left.Los Angeles didn’t cut the margin below double digits the rest of the game.Crawford scored 18 points for the Clippers, who hurt themselves at the free-throw line, finishing 7-of-15. Russell Westbrook scored 12 and Lamb added 11 for the Thunder.Oklahoma City took advantage of the Clippers’ early shooting woes to take a 13-3 lead just over five minutes into the game. Los Angeles struggled at times against the Thunder’s interior defense, as Ibaka and rookie Steven Adams each blocked a pair of shots in the first-half.Oklahoma’s City led by 13 before taking a 51-43 edge at halftime.Griffin, limited to six points in the first half, scored seven straight baskets for the Clippers during the third quarter and his 20-foot jumper pulled Los Angeles within 68-62. The Thunder rebuilt its lead with a basket from Kendrick Perkins, a three-point play from Durant and a 17-foot jumper by Ibaka. OKLAHOMA CITY >> Kevin Durant and the Oklahoma City Thunder put on one of their best shooting displays of the season Thursday night and their fans seem to be following the team’s cue.Durant scored 28 points and the Thunder made 51.9 percent in beating the Clippers 105-91. But that pales in comparison to what Oklahoma City fans are shooting this week during a second-quarter promotion at Chesapeake Energy Arena. For the second straight game, and the fifth time during the 2013 calendar year, a Thunder fan hit a half-court heave to win $20,000 in a contest sponsored by MidFirst Bank.Brad Brucker, a 33-year-old business teacher at Piedmont High School, made the money shot two days after another fan, Cameron Rodriguez, hit from midcourt in a win over Denver. As Brucker left the floor, he was greeted and congratulated by recording stars Beyonce and Jay-Z, who watched from courtside seats next to Durant’s family.Brucker said the experience “didn’t feel real.”Durant joked after the game that “we might go broke after these guys, they’re hitting every half-court shot.” But he added it was fun watching fans hit those shots.Durant also enjoyed watching the Thunder post their second-best shooting outing of the season and lead all the way against Los Angeles in a matchup of Western Conference powers.Oklahoma City has won its first five home games of the season for the first time since 2004-05, when the franchise was in Seattle.
